NAIDOC - Get Up, Stand Up, Show Up!!

3rd - 10th of July

Yilay is excited to be launching our 2022 NAIDOC range, having the privilege to partner with five amazing First Nations artists for this years theme - Get Up, Stand Up, Show Up

GET UP! STAND UP! SHOW UP!

From the frontier wars and our earliest resistance fighters to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities fighting for change today—we continue to show up.

Now is our time. We cannot afford to lose momentum for change.

We all must continue to Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! for systemic change and keep rallying around our mob, our Elders, our communities.

Whether it’s seeking proper environmental, cultural and heritage protections, Constitutional change, a comprehensive process of truth-telling, working towards treaties, or calling out racism—we must do it together.

It must be a genuine commitment by all of us to Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! and support and secure institutional, structural, collaborative, and cooperative reforms.

It’s also time to celebrate the many who have driven and led change in our communities over generations—they have been the heroes and champions of change, of equal rights and even basic human rights.

Getting Up, Standing Up, and Showing Up can take many forms.

Translation: Keeping true to our culture

The theme for this year makes me reflect on our old people and our ancestors, to honour them by practicing what they have taught us, making sure we strengthen that knowledge, keeping true to the path they have shown us and making sure we are passing it down to our children. By doing that we are continuing their legacies and honouring them at the same time.

Get Up, Stand Up, Show Up

Davinder Hart

This years theme is Get up, Stand up, Show up and the design I have created illustrates that exactly. The first circle is get up, second circle is stand up and the last is show up. To distinguish the order I have purposely created the energy like waves moving up the design to show the motion in its physical form, the energy of the people who have contributed to giving Indigenous people a voice. Yet this design has a number of meanings in terms of the theme. I believe its being firm and staunch when engaging and speaking about First Nations people. Also calling out forms of racism, for many Indigenous people experiencing racism on a daily is very detrimental and can be devastating for those who it affects. Calling out racism whether you're Indigenous or not is a step in the right direction and to educate those on the real history of Australia.

I would like to acknowledge those past, present and emerging for their knowledge passed down from generation to generation. Continuation of the worlds oldest culture.

Moving Forward Together

Leah Cummins

This piece "Moving Forward Together" is inspired by the 2022 NAIDOC theme "Get Up, Stand Up, Show Up!"

The inspiration around the art is the power of community, our community of women, men and elders coming and meeting together in different yarning circles to act for our mob. In order to move forward to enact change we must bring together each clan to hold one voice to push forward and show a united people.

The symbols in the circles (women, men and elders) connected by the connection of lines to each clan group near and far. Each connection of community is powerful, it supports a vision of unity in establishing a future for our people. Stand Up and fight for change as a united front and make things happen.

We must dream big to be big, become everything our ancestors could ever dream for us.

I want to share this piece with love and harmony.

Spirit Warriors

Dan Evans

For many years spirituality has and continues to be a important part of our culture and community.

The warriors spirit is defined as the core of his existence. Overtime our people will pass and their spirits will remain a strong connection to the mother Earth.

The spirit of the warrior will return to the Dreamtime, re-birthing through our native animals of the land and sea. This is where our Dreamtime stories begin to transform through our ancestor's paintings, language, culture, dance and strong connections with our mob.

The Warrior Spirit is in us all and can be felt at times of despair, to encourage us to stand up and be countered, let our culture thrive through our ancestors before us.
